The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
