The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the closure began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
