British Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of approach shafts down to the depot... initial indications are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," Healey added. "They were part of numerous UK service members stationed over the holidays. This mission, to take out militants who endanger our security, demonstrates how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in Syria, after an attack killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
