Fresh analysis suggests that patients who stop using popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People purchasing these medications should be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened rebound.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Accounts
Users who have come off the jabs report a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Significant Use
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
